Elsa Thoresen (1906 - 1994) was an American and one of the artists in Danish surrealism. Chosen by André Breton, Paul Éluard and Marcel Duchamp, for the surrealist group major exhibitions in 1938 and 1947. Married Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen in Copenhagen in 1935. Escaped the Nazis and fled to Sweden in 1944. Divorced Bjerke-Petersen in 1953 and moved back to the US, where a series of abstract paintings remain, rarely exhibited. Over the years her name has been forgotten, but recently more people have opened their eyes to her uniqueness.
